Making People Happy

I had a lovely meeting yesterday with a couple that is getting married at the end of the month. It was a nice way to end the day, getting to talk with a couple of people who are so looking forward to the celebration of their love.

It’s easy to get distracted by the business side of what we do every day. It is such a nice dose of sunlight to be reminded that we are in the business of making people happy. Music is there when people are at their highest and their lowest. Every meaningful event in our lives has a soundtrack, and how lucky are we to be invited to provide that soundtrack for so many people.

Don’t get distracted by the business side of what we do. It’s easy to get caught up in the particulars of putting on the show. Obviously there are many things that need to fall into place every night, but remind yourself to take a moment every once in a while and reflect on the magic of the service we are providing people. At every show we are making memories more memorable. We are making special times more special. We make people happy. For a living. And that’s pretty great.

Sweat the Small Stuff

You get to make hundreds of little decisions every day – no one is going to make them all the same as you. Every single one is a celebration of the uniqueness of you. So don’t stress. Don’t get bogged down in the decision-making. When little things go wrong (and they will), let it go. Learn from your mistakes and move on, but you have got to make yourself available to the little things because sometimes they go right. Take pride in small victories throughout the day and you will be happier for it. Look for joy in those little things in life. Celebrate them. If you spend all your time chasing the Big Picture, you are going to miss a lot of beauty in the world, so why not sweat the small stuff. Maybe “sweat” is the wrong word. Embrace the small stuff, because the small stuff is usually what makes life worth living.
